  • Manus Raises $500M+ After Beijing Unwinds Meta's $2B Takeover

Meta tried to buy Manus for more than two billion dollars. Beijing said no. Now the agent startup has raised more than $500 million on its own terms, and the message to every founder with a hot model is clear: independence is suddenly a fundable strategy.

Butterfly Effect, Manus's parent company, announced the round on Thursday, October 8. Boyu Capital and IDG Capital co-led it, with Tencent, HSG, and ZhenFund piling in. It is the company's first funding round since the unwound Meta deal, and investors reportedly priced the company at around $4 billion — roughly twice what Meta had been willing to pay.

The backstory is pure geopolitics. Meta agreed to acquire the China-founded, Singapore-based startup late last year, but in April Beijing ordered the deal reversed amid tightening scrutiny of American investment in Chinese AI companies. Manus resumed independent operations in August — and had to delete some user data as part of the separation from Meta.

The numbers behind the round are the interesting part. The Information reported in June that Manus's annualized revenue run rate had surged to about $500 million, up from $100 million when Meta acquired it. That is the kind of revenue curve that makes venture capitalists forget regulatory trauma fast.

Manus sells general-purpose AI agents — software that autonomously carries out research, automation, and real-world tasks with minimal human input. The company recently launched Manus 2.0 and Cue, a standalone personal AI agent designed to work across services including communication and payments.

Dan Wang, China director at Eurasia Group, told CNBC the raise shows "the short-term fallout of the Meta case has been contained and investors are willing to back Manus as an independent company."

There is a wrinkle, though: a Hong Kong listing is off the table until at least 2027, per one source. For now, Manus has half a billion dollars, a Singapore address, a Beijing engineering bench, and something Meta could not buy: a story about surviving a breakup with a superpower's blessing to stay single.

India Targets AI Regulation Paper in 30 Days and 10,000 GPUs for Public AI

While Washington argues about what to call AI, New Delhi is doing something more consequential: writing the rulebook and buying the chips to enforce it.

India's Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on October 8 that the government will publish an AI regulation consultation paper within thirty days. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, he told his department to produce a document focused primarily on safety — covering AI safety, deepfakes, liability gaps, and skilling — as the foundation for a future techno-legal framework.

Your AI agent is about to walk into a store. Meta and Sierra want to make sure it knows how to knock.

On October 6, at Sierra Summit in San Francisco, Sierra and Meta announced the Personal Agent Protocol — PAP, an open standard for how a person's AI agent signs in to a business and gets a task done there. Sierra co-founders Bret Taylor, the former Salesforce co-CEO, and Clay Bavor published the announcement with founding partners Walmart, Stripe, Shopify, Genesys, Rocket, and Instinct.
